From National to Local: Distributed ASA Alerting for DAB Networks

When an emergency alert is broadcast, it needs to reach people reliably and across different parts of the network. But distributing alert information to every individual multiplex can require additional infrastructure and dedicated connections.

The 2wcom DAB Monitoring Receiver takes a different approach. By continuously monitoring an ASA-enabled DAB ensemble over the air, it can independently verify what is actually being transmitted while also detecting active alerts.

These alerts can then be used to automatically trigger OE Alert signalling in connected local or regional DAB multiplexes. This creates a distributed alerting approach where alert information can propagate from national to local networks using the broadcast signal itself as the source.

An ASA-enabled DAB ensemble can itself become the source for alert information.

The 2wcom Monitoring Receiver detects an alert and automatically triggers OE Alert signalling in a connected local or regional multiplex.

Distributed ASA Alerting: How It Works

1. National DAB ensemble broadcasts an alert

The alert is transmitted as FIG 0/15, including the relevant geographic Location Codes.

2. 2wcom Monitoring Receiver detects the alert

Installed at a local or regional headend, the receiver continuously monitors the national ensemble over RF.

3. Receiver informs the local multiplexer

The relevant alert parameters are transferred via JSON to the connected local or regional DAB multiplexer.

4. Local multiplex broadcasts an OE Alert

The local multiplex generates a FIG 0/15 Other Ensemble Alert, directing compatible receivers to the national ensemble carrying the actual warning.

The Result

Alert information can propagate from national to local DAB networks without requiring a central alert-distribution connection to every individual multiplex.

By using the broadcast signal itself as a source for alert information, the 2wcom DAB Monitoring Receiver adds another layer to ASA-enabled DAB networks: independent monitoring combined with automated alert propagation across different parts of the network.
