A New Way to Keep HD Radio® and FM in Sync

2wcom introduces a new transport solution that combines HD Radio® E2X and analog or digital MPX into one synchronized stream. The result is precise HD/FM timing, simplified distribution, and improved reliability across IP networks.

In hybrid radio, timing matters.

To keep HD Radio® and FM properly aligned, both parts of the signal chain need to stay in sync throughout transport and distribution. As broadcast infrastructures continue to move toward IP-based workflows, that challenge becomes more important and more complex.

2wcom’s new solution addresses this by combining the HD Radio® E2X signal and an analog or digital MPX signal into one synchronized transport stream. Instead of managing separate paths for HD and FM, broadcasters can transport both together in lockstep.

This brings clear practical advantages. It helps maintain precise HD/FM timing, simplifies hybrid radio distribution, and improves reliability across IP networks. At the same time, the solution is designed to fit into existing infrastructures, with compatibility for Gen3 environments and support for analog or digital MPX workflows.

The new transport solution also supports flexible MPX transport options. Broadcasters can work with uncompressed MPX in the range of 1.5 to 6.1 Mbit/s or use compressed MPX at 320 kbit/s with aptMPX or µMPX, depending on network requirements. High-precision timing via GPS / 1PPS ensures alignment between HD and FM, while the stated FM accuracy is suitable for SFN operation.

For modern IP-based distribution, resilience is another key benefit. According to the product text, E2X can be protected with mechanisms such as SRT, Dual Flow redundancy, and other resilient transport technologies, supporting reliable delivery across real-world networks.

By transporting HD Radio® E2X and MPX together in one synchronized stream, 2wcom offers broadcasters a robust and future-ready approach to hybrid radio distribution: reliable, compatible, and synchronized.

NAB Show 2026 is getting close, and the 2wcom team is looking forward to being in Las Vegas again. It is the perfect place to meet, catch up, talk through current projects and show what we have been working on.

One topic we are especially excited about this year is MoIN. A Real Deadline, Not a Demo: Radio Training Network’s MoIN Deployment Story

When Radio Training Network reached out about additional licensing, it was not part of a routine expansion. A real operational deadline had just landed on the table.

Late on a Thursday night, the team learned they had only ten days to absorb one of their sister networks and migrate its broadcast operations into their Riverview, Florida facility. Multiple full-power stations and translators across several states needed to be integrated, covering two different formats, all without any service disruption.

According to Aaron Schultz, IT Director and Assistant Engineer at Radio Training Network, the first questions from management were simple and direct. What would it cost, and could it be done in time?

The answer came down to flexibility.

Rather than deploying new physical STL hardware or scheduling site visits under heavy time pressure, the team chose a software-driven approach. Using MoIN as the transport layer and existing IP-4c units at transmitter sites, a new MoIN pod was spun up and SRT paths were established back to the studio and out to each site for both primary and failover audio.

The result was immediate.

In under 30 minutes, the MoIN pod was live, all audio paths were established, end-to-end audio was verified, and link stability was confirmed. No new hardware was installed at the studio, and no transmitter site visits were required.

Under the previous box-to-box model, this type of deployment would have meant additional STL hardware, physical integration work, and more potential points of failure. With MoIN, the entire setup was handled in software.

As the team approached final cutover, the transition itself was straightforward. Live program audio could be rerouted from the Riverview studios to transmitter sites across multiple states remotely with just a few clicks. The entire process was controlled centrally and executed with confidence.

For Radio Training Network, this deployment further validated a strategy that has been in progress for the past two years. The combination of MoIN as a software transport platform and IP-4c hardware at transmitter sites has enabled faster deployments, lower capital expenditure, fewer physical dependencies, and significantly greater operational agility.

This was not a lab test or a planned demo. It was a real deadline, real stations, and real operational pressure. The fact that it was executed entirely from desks, without emergency site work or last-minute hardware installations, highlighted the maturity and practicality of the platform.

MPX Spectrum Analyzer for Real-Time Signal Visibility

Understanding the structure of an multiplex signal is essential when troubleshooting broadcast transmission chains.

With the integrated MPX Spectrum Analyzer, 2wcom provides engineers with a clear visual representation of the multiplex signal directly within the device interface.

The analyzer allows users to inspect the MPX spectrum in real time and verify important signal components such as stereo pilot tones, RDS signals, and other subcarriers.

To support practical broadcast workflows, the analyzer includes features such as:

zoom levels for detailed spectrum inspection
marker tools for signal analysis
the ability to export screenshots as PNG files

This allows engineers to quickly analyze signal structure and identify potential issues without requiring additional measurement equipment.

The MPX Spectrum Analyzer is currently available on our MPX-Platform, such as the MPX-1g and MPX-2c.

Live Listening: Audio Monitoring Made Easy

Previously available as an optional add on, Live Listening is now included as a standard feature across all devices. This provides immediate access to audio monitoring capabilities right out of the box without additional licensing or configuration effort.

With the Live Listening option, audio monitoring becomes simple and accessible from anywhere. The feature allows users to listen to any available audio signal directly via a web interface or through any standard web stream client without requiring additional software.

Live Listening enables real time monitoring of audio feeds for quick checks, troubleshooting, and quality control. This makes it a practical tool for broadcast and transmission environments.

By integrating Live Listening as a default feature, we aim to simplify daily operations and give users greater visibility and confidence in their audio signals at all times.

hsf Student Radio and our IP-4c

A little while ago, around the end of last year, we had the pleasure of supporting hsf Studentenradio e.V. with a special anniversary gift: an IP-4c audio codec, provided on the occasion of their 75th anniversary.

Since then, hsf has already shared their own experience and impressions in a LinkedIn post, which we were very happy to see and appreciate greatly.

The IP-4c was supplied to help improve the audio link between the studio and the transmitter site at Vogelherd. The existing connection, based on a shared IP microwave link, is prone to occasional packet loss — a challenge the IP-4c addresses with features such as FEC, RIST, and SRT, resulting in a more stable and robust transmission.

Additional features like detailed packet loss statistics support ongoing link optimization, while dual streaming enables redundancy via a separate network. In the event of a failure, the integrated backup switching allows automatic fallback to a web stream or file playback.

Even though the Christmas lights are long gone, we’re still very happy to have supported hsf Studentenradio e.V. and wish them continued success in their anniversary year and beyond.

From the Lab: Native Dante Support at 2wcom

At 2wcom, many of our ideas don’t start in marketing meetings. They start in conversations between engineers, customers, and real-world broadcast workflows.

One topic that has come up more and more over the past months is Dante.

Not just interoperability with Dante networks, but native Dante integration, built directly into our hardware.

Today, our products already support AES67, Livewire, and Ravenna, enabling interoperability with Dante networks and many other AoIP ecosystems. In practice, however, Dante-native workflows are often simply smoother in daily operation, especially in Dante-centric environments.

That led to an internal question:
What would it take to bring native Dante support to 2wcom devices without compromising our core value of open interoperability?

The answer we’re currently working on is a native Dante hardware module, developed as an optional extension for the IP-4c.

The module is currently under active development. More details will follow as we move closer to release, but for now, we wanted to share a first glimpse into what’s happening in our lab and open the conversation with broadcasters and integrators who are interested in where this is going.

How HAMBURG OPEN Brought Us Together

Just in time for this year’s HAMBURG OPEN, we wanted to share a little story from behind the scenes and how Bjarke found his way to 2wcom.

Bjarke Wrobel joined the 2wcom team not too long ago and now works with us as a Global Sales Engineer. When we first met him at HAMBURG OPEN 2025, he was still working as a Broadcast Engineer and giving a talk about his university project “Remote Jack”, focused on remote production.

During the event, Bjarke noticed 2wcom Systems as one of the companies from his hometown, Flensburg, and decided to stop by for a quick chat. As it turns out, our COO Mirko Goldschmidt had attended Bjarke’s talk earlier that day, which made the conversation even more interesting.

One chat turned into a longer one, everything clicked, and the rest pretty much wrote itself.

Since then, Bjarke has become a familiar face at 2wcom and will be back at HAMBURG OPEN this year, representing 2wcom Systems together with the rest of the team.

2wcom at the “Treffpunkt IP”, hosted by ARD.ZDF media academy

This week, our colleagues Arne and Sönke are attending the “Treffpunkt IP” event organised by the ARD.ZDF media academy.

Arne has already delivered his presentation “Audio Everywhere – flexible, robust, interoperable”, showing how traditional broadcast technologies and modern IT infrastructures can be combined into scalable, resilient and future-ready architectures.

During the event’s Marketplace, Arne and Sönke are also answering questions on professional audio workflows. Topics include hardware-based audio codecs, containerised and orchestratable services and hybrid setups across On-Prem, Cloud and mixed environments.

The discussions on site clearly highlight how interoperability, flexibility and modern software architectures work together and which new use cases this opens up for broadcasters.

We thank the ARD.ZDF media academy for the invitation and appreciate the valuable exchange throughout the event.

MPX-1g features DAB reception for FM re-broadcast and backup scenarios

Our MPX-1g is widely known as a versatile Stereo and RDS encoder for MPX generation and now it goes even further! The new DAB Databridge option makes the re-broadcast functionality of the MPX-1g even more powerful. Equipped with a DAB tuner, it can not only use DAB as an audio source for FM re-distribution, but now also convert DAB service signalling and Dynamic Labels into RDS data.

This enables new application scenarios such as local and cable rebroadcast, gap-filler installations, or interim replacement of STL links. It is also ideal for backup and recovery setups: the MPX-1g automatically switches from the primary feed to the DAB backup source according to predefined criteria.

Both audio and MPX can serve as the primary feed.

If audio is used, the MPX-1g activates its internal stereo and RDS encoder.
If the primary feed is MPX, the automatic configuration feature adapts the MPX signal to the active source without user intervention.

Combined with advanced backup switching and automatic configuration, the MPX-1g delivers a complete, ready-to-go solution for FM rebroadcasting from DAB.

Feature highlights

DAB Backup Switching
When the primary MPX feed fails, the system switches to DAB according to the configured criteria. In automatic configuration mode, the unit enables stereo and RDS decoding.

Selective RDS Generation from DAB Data
RDS elements can be individually selected for generation based on the received DAB signalling.

Dynamic RDS from DAB PAD and Service Information
When operating in DAB backup mode, the RDS encoder uses selected DAB PAD and service information for RDS generation.

In summary

The DAB Databridge option can function as a UECP ancillary data provider based on DAB PAD and service information. Users can select which DAB data should be transferred into RDS for example, DAB Dynamic Labels can be automatically converted and truncated for use as RDS Radio Text.
