2wcom Press Release

Less than 200 ms – to “cover the last mile” from Jakarta to Bali

2wcom / Indonesien - “One year ago the time to detect and evaluate a possible Tsunami threat took more than 100 minutes. Due to the technology and expertise provided by the Geo Forschungs Zentrum Potsdam / Germany the time minimises to five minutes today.”

2wcom / Germany is taking care to “cover the last mile” in order to alert and forward vital information to the public. The first test of the system was held in Sanur, Bali, on December 26, the second anniversary of the 2004 Asian Tsunami that hit nine countries and killed more than 177,000 people in Indonesia's Aceh province alone.

A Radio Data System from 2WCOM, has been installed in December 2006 in Bali, two more areas to follow: Padang in West Sumatra and an additional destination at the southern coast of Java.
Through the wireless system, when offshore buoys detect a possible tsunami approaching, an emergency warning will immediately broadcast nationwide on Indonesian state radio, interrupting regular programming.

The first test of the system was held in Sanur, Bali, on December 26, with outstanding performance and excellent results. The picture below does show Mr. Harald Spahn, GTZ Germany, in front the FM-RDS Multi-Hazard Public Warning Receiver from 2wcom. The EW Receicer was located on a chair at the beach in Sanur operated without main-power running on battery only.

GTZ Germany is responsible for the Capacity Building in Indonesia along with the GITEWS.
